Use Visualization To Stay On Track When Motivation Dips

We are now a full month in to 2019 and if you’re like most people your New Year’s resolutions have fallen by the wayside. This is not unusual; it’s difficult to stay motivated in the depths of winter and as your day-to-day gets back on track after the holidays it is easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. The good news is, it’s not impossible to get back on track, regain your mojo, and hit your goals whether they are personal or professional.

The Marketing Shop is here to help you stay on track with your business goals and we’ll be sharing tips and advice through the month of February to help you do just that! First up, we will take a look at visualization and how it can be used to help you reach your goals.

Take Time To Dream

Visualization, daydreams, imagining…whatever you call it, it can be a very effective way to stick to your goals. In today’s always connected, always on world, most people take very little time to just be. To think. To dream.

It’s kind of ironic when you think about it. Dreams are what got most entrepreneurs to this point in their lives, but once we get there, we have less time to spend on those dreams in favor of making the reality work. But visualizing success isn’t just a gimmicky way for self-help professionals to pack their seminars full of overworked, stressed out businesspeople. It does work. And I’ll tell you why.

Visualization serves as both a meditative practice and a goal-setting routine. When you take time to visualize, you are allowing yourself the opportunity to consider the possibilities. It’s a terrific way to problem-solve and set goals, but it goes deeper than that to recharge your psyche and motivate you to keep pushing forward with your goals and dreams.

Giving yourself “permission” to take a break from the day-to-day is really the key to unlocking the potential of visualization. With the okay to take a break from the usual routine, you free yourself from the all-too-common entrepreneur’s guilt that pushes many of us to always be working towards the here and now. Visualization is suddenly validated and valued as a business must-do as opposed to a waste of time.

Organizations of all sizes practice visualization in the form of strategic planning. As a solo entrepreneur or small business owner, you may not need a formal strategic planning process, but the concept remains the same: take some time out of your schedule to reflect on what you’ve done, take stock of what you’re doing, and ensure it aligns with where you want to go.

Visualization isn’t just a business tool. Athletes, performers, public speakers, students…people from all walks of life benefit from taking the time to focus on what they want to achieve or how they want an event, activity, or action to turn out.

Business Rx: Daydream

My advice? Take some time to daydream every day. Turn it into a goal-setting session if you like. Use a journal to jot down your ideas for the future. Take stock of what you need to do today to achieve results tomorrow (or at some other future date). Give yourself permission to think and consider and problem solve and just focus on the bigger picture.

Once you do, I guarantee you’ll find yourself a little more refreshed, focused, and motivated and you may even be surprised by your own creativity.
