Tribe. It’s a concept that has been around for thousands of years but the term has recently enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in both personal and business interactions. Traditionally defined as a social division in societies or communities, a tribe was a group of people who shared some kind of common link, be it a family group, economic status, religious beliefs, or some other commonality. Over time, as nations developed and civilizations grew, we found other ways to define ourselves and the term fell out of use. Now, the term tribe is used to define a group of people you’ve chosen to surround yourself with.

Urban Dictionary defines it as:

“The people that will be there for you no matter what and who you’re guaranteed to have a good time with. Although people may not understand how close they are and their relationships with each other, it doesn’t matter because they all understand it and love each other.”

“Close friends, group of people who are loyal to you, care for you like family.”

I see the term used a lot by friend groups, particularly younger generations, but I think it can apply to a much broader audience. I think everyone should have a tribe – especially entrepreneurs.

Why You Need A Tribe

We’ve been over this before: being an entrepreneur is hard! Even if you have the support and encouragement of your family and friends, it may not be exactly what you need to succeed as a business owner. This is where a tribe can be extremely valuable.

Your tribe can be other business owners who are in similar situations or industries to your own. People who are facing the same questions, trials, and struggles, but also the same wins and accomplishments. Your tribe can also be other people or business owners who simply lift you up; who have decided to live a bigger life and are taking massive action to make it a reality. Your tribe may include people you look up to and try to emulate: mentors, mentees, outside professionals, even valued customers or clients. Surround yourself with people who are what you want to be or where you want to go.

That’s really the underlying connection I want to hone in on: the people in your tribe should lift you up, encourage you in your endeavors, and support your advancement towards your goals and dreams. When motivations dips or frustration mounts this is the group you can turn to for help weathering the storm.
